Primark opens US flagship on Herald Square

Irish fashion retailer Primark has officially opened the doors to its long-awaited Manhattan flagship, marking a major milestone in the retailer’s growing US ambitions as it ramps up expansion across the country.

The new store, located at 150W 34th Street in New York’s busy Penn District, directly opposite Penn Station, becomes Primark’s 40th US location and its biggest statement yet in the North American market. Spanning more than 5,000 sq m, the opening also gives Primark a flagship presence in New York comparable to its major stores in European fashion capitals including London, Milan, Madrid and Rome as the retailer continues to build brand awareness in the US.

“This is a landmark moment for Primark in the United States as we open our incredible new flagship at the epicentre of American fashion,” said Kevin Tulip, President of Primark US. “Our flagship at Herald Square is a defining moment for Primark’s US growth story. New York is a city where trends are born and where style is worn with unstoppable confidence. But great style should not come with an impossible price tag and that’s where Primark comes in. From quality styles to value prices, we’re inviting every NYC shopper to our Manhattan doorstep as we open our doors in the epicentre of American fashion.”

The opening day saw Primark host a ribbon-cutting ceremony, giveaways and a block party in Herald Square Plaza.

Founded in Ireland in 1969, Primark has steadily expanded its US footprint since debuting in Boston in 2015. The retailer now operates stores across 13 states, with recent openings in Miami, Grapevine, Katy and Gurnee. The company also recently opened a new store at North East Mall in Hurst, Texas, continuing a rapid push across the south and Sun Belt regions.

The Herald Square opening further strengthens Primark’s position in New York State, where it now operates 11 stores. While the retailer has historically focused on malls and suburban locations in the US, the Manhattan flagship signals a greater emphasis on high-profile urban retail destinations and tourist-heavy shopping districts.

The Manhattan opening also lands at a time when several international retailers are reassessing physical retail strategies in major US cities. While some brands have reduced store portfolios, Primark continues to double down on bricks-and-mortar retail, arguing that physical stores remain critical to the customer experience.

The company now operates more than 480 stores globally across 19 countries, employing over 80,000 people. Alongside the U.S. expansion, Primark has continued to grow in continental Europe and has also entered Middle Eastern markets through franchise partnerships.
